From Passive Optimization to Active Exploration: Gamified Flavor Exploration
EC2025
Abstract
Personalized flavor optimization by computer systems tends to hinder serendipitous encounters with new flavors, making users passive and reducing their exploratory motivation. This research aims to shift toward active exploration by gamifying an interface that collaborates with "AromaSynth," an olfactory medium. Similar to adventuring through a video game world, users can explore various scents. These flavors are actually blended and added by AromaSynth for the user to enjoy. In this paper, we discuss the design principles and methods specifically aimed at evoking user motivation for exploration.
